West Side Story

West Side Story is a 1961 musical based on the 1957 book by Arthur Laurents.
 The plot is based on the immortal story of Romeo and Juliet, unfolded in a new way. On the streets of Manhattan, there is a merciless war for living space between two street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Tony is a member of the Jet gang and the best friend of its leader Riff. Dark-skinned Maria is the sister of the leader of the Puerto Ricans of the Sharks. Tony and Maria fall in love with each other despite the hatred of friends and relatives, and the film tells about their beautiful but tragic love …
     The dark theme, sophisticated music, dance scenes, and focus on social problems of the film marked a turning point in American musical theatre.
     

The Godfather 

                                           

    The Godfather is a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, based on Mario Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of the same name.

    The crime saga which tells about the New York Sicilian mafia family Corleone covers the period of 1945-1955. The head of the family, Don Vito Corleone wants to find a husband for his daughter. At this time, his beloved son Michael returns from the Second World War. Michael, the hero of war, the pride of the family, does not express a desire to engage in a cruel family business. Don Corleone conducts business according to the old rules, but other times come, and other people appear who want to change the established order and assassinate the old mafia leader..

    Since its release, The Godfather has been widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, especially in the gangster genre. It was followed by sequels The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990).

Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (1899 - 1980)

Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (1899 - 1980)
Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was an English film director and producer. He is one of the most influential and extensively studied filmmakers in the history of cinema. Hitchcock is known as the "Master of Suspense".  50 feature films were created throughout his career and he became as well known as any of his actors thanks to his many interviews and his cameo roles in most of his films. His films garnered 46 Oscar nominations and 6 wins of this award.
The "Hitchcockian" style includes the use of camera movement to mimic a person's gaze, thereby turning viewers into voyeurs, and framing shots to maximise anxiety and fear.

The Birds

The Birds is a 1963 American horror-thriller film produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The movie is based on the 1952 story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. The film depicts the terrifying picture of bird attacks on an American village which is intertwined with the story of a young woman's love relationship with a man she likes.
In 2016, The Birds was called "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress, and selected to be preserved in its National Film Registry.

Psycho

Psycho is a 1960 American psychological horror film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, and written by Joseph Stefano.
The film tells a story of  a secretary Marion Crane who is unhappy with the affair with a divorced man who pays attention to her only on short visits. Therefore, the girl steals a large sum at work and in a hurry escapes from the city. In the motel where Marion stops for the night, she meets its owner, a very strange young man...
Psycho was filmed on a low budget, in black-and-white, and by a television crew. Nevertheless, Psycho was nominated for four Academy Awards and is now considered one the greatest films of all time as well as the earliest example of the slasher film genre.

All about Eve 

All About Eve is a 1950 American drama film written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. It was based on the 1946 short story The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr.
The aging Broadway star Margot Channing used to have everything: success, friends, a young lover. The modest and hardworking Eve becomes her assistant, fulfilling all the wishes of the hostess. The cynical theater critic Addison De Witt is the only one to quickly understand that Eve is driven by the desire to become the “new Margot Channing,” Saturated with life and despising the decency surrounding him, he decides to help the young careerist. She becomes his grateful and industrious student who goes to the heights of fame betraying the people around her.
Praised by critics at the time of its release, All About Eve received a record 14 Academy Award nominations and won six, including Best Picture. All About Eve is the only film in Oscar history to receive four female acting nominations. The film is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.

An American in Paris

An American in Paris is a 1951 American musical comedy film inspired by the 1928 orchestral composition An American in Paris by George Gershwin.
Former soldier Jerry is trying to become an artist in post-war Paris. And has some success, having found a wealthy patroness who buys his paintings and recommends them to her friends.One day he enters a nightclub and meets Lisa and young people instantly fall in love. But later she unexpectedly reports that she is engaged to his friend. Both Jerry and Lisa act in a noble way, deciding not to meet again.
An American in Paris had an enormous success, garnering eight Academy Award nominations and winning six. It is considered one of the  greatest movie musicals.

    As for me, my summer is typical from year to year. I usually spend June at home. I get up late all the time and try to be outside with my friends as much as possible. I really enjoy summer evenings when my friends and I can go for a walk in the park or ride around the city on our bikes. If the weather is bad I stay at home playing computer games or just surfing the Internet.
    July and August I usually spend in the countryside with my grandparents. I have a lot of friends there as well. We often go to the lake for swimming or sunbathing. It’s always active time and we have a lot of things to do together.

My Winter Holidays

    Every year I have winter holidays. They usually last for two weeks. Holidays give me the opportunity not to get up early in the morning, so I sleep till 9 o’clock.
When the weather is cold, I prefer to stay at home and read something interesting, play computer games or surf the Internet. As I spend lots of time at home, I have to help my mom with cooking or cleaning. In the evening I usually visit my friends or go out with them to the cinema or cafе.
Of course, winter holidays are not so long and joyful as summer holidays, but in any case winter holidays is the time of rest.

My Day Off

    My name is Alissa. I’m six years old. I’m from Moscow. I study five days a week that’s why I try to spend my two days off merrily and interestingly. In the morning I wake up later than usual. I like to lie slugging a bed and to watch TV. Television shows many interesting programmes on Sunday. My mother cooks something delicious at the weekend. She bakes cakes or sweet buns. We have breakfast together and then walk around the town. I like my day off very much because I can have a good rest and collect my strength for a whole week.

Holidays in Great Britain

    British people like any other nation like holidays. It is a time to rest and spend with relatives and friend. One of the most popular holidays in Britain is St. Valentine’s Day. Every Febru-ary 14th, boys and girls tell each other about their love and thank each other for the support and understanding. People send Valentine cards.
Most people in England like Pancake Race on Shrove Tuesday. At home families have pancakes for dinner. At school teachers and children have pancakes for school dinner. Eve-ryone knows that pancakes are tasty, but not everyone knows that in England on Shrove Thursday, people race with them, fight for them.

American Holidays

    There are many holidays in the USA which are celebrated from year to year. American people enjoy having holidays, especially if they are public. During such holidays children don’t go to school and adults don’t work. The most favourite public holidays in the USA are Christmas and New Year. Christmas season starts on December the 25th and continues till New Year celebrations. It’s also the time of present exchange.
Another important American holiday is Independence Day on July the 4th.
Thanksgiving Day is another interesting American holiday. It is celebrated every fourth Thursday of November.

Ways of spending Holidays

    In my opinion there is a great number of different ways of spending summer holidays. It depends on person, on his culture, education, age, social level and personal tastes. So, everyone likes his own way of summertime spending.
It is a great pleasure to have a rest after a whole year of hard work or study. People like to travel during their summer holidays.
Some people go abroad to see new countries, some people prefer to go to the country-side to enjoy country-life far from noise and fuss of big cities. Other people like staying at home doing nothing, but watching TV and playing computer games.
Some people like to spend their holidays in cities, visiting theatres, museums and going sightseeing. But a great number of people go to the seaside.

Four seasons of the year

    There are four seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn and winter. I like spring best of all. Spring is the most pleasant season. The weather is getting warmer and warmer, everything changes. Sometimes it rains, but there are no cold winds. The sun shines brightly. The grass is green.
    The summer months are June, July and August. Summer is the hottest season of the year. The days are the longest in summer. The longest day of the year is the 22nd of June.
     After summer comes autumn. The autumn months are September, October and November.  Autumn is the season of fruit and vegetables. The days arebecoming shorter and the nights are getting longer and darker. The weather is not so good as in summer. It often rains.
     Winter is the coldest season of the year. The winter months are December, January and February. The winter days are short. It often snows and it freezes. Winter is a very beautiful season, too. Some people like it very much.

1. The weather in Finland

      The weather in Finland changes from season to season. Summerusually lasts from May to early September, and temperatures can reach up to +35 °C. Autumns are dark and rainy. Winter snow usually begins to fall in Helsinki early December (in Lapland it can start snowing as early as October) and in winter the temperature can drop to -30 °C. Winterusually lasts to mid-March, when the snow melts in Helsinki (in Lapland the snow usually doesn't melt until early May), and spring lasts till late May. Spring can be erratic, and the weather can change from frost to sunshine within a matter of days. The famed Northern Lights are common in Lapland.
       

2. The weather in the UK

     The country is located on islands. The weather in the UK is mild. Spring in the UK is rather dry but it is still quite cold. June is the best month to visit the country. After all, the British Monarchs choose it for their birthday celebrations for a reason. The winds calm down and the rains don’t bother. In the beginning of autumn the weather is still pleasant. Days are shorter and the air is cooler. Winter in the UK is wet. January is the coldest month of a year. Cities and towns are covered in fogs.

3. The weather in Australia

   Australia is a small continent. Australia is home to many animals. It is the biggest desert island in the earth.
   The times of year in Australia are inverse. The winter season starts in June. (December to February is summer; March to May is autumn; June to August is winter; and September to November is spring). Summers are hot and winters are mild, with rainfall.
   

4. The weather in Russia

   Russia is the largest country in the world. Spring is the most wonderful season with changes in everything.
   Spring is the season of hope, happiness and love. The ground is covered with green grass and the first flowers.
   Winter is the coldest season of the year. The days are shorter and the nights are longer. There is snow in winter. The rivers and lakes are frozen over. Everything is covered with snow.

5. The weather I like

1. Education in Finland

       School in Finland begins in August and ends in May. Lessons start at 9 am and usually end by 2 pm. Typically, pupils have 3 to 4 classes a day. Each class lasts about 75 minutes. Several breaks during the day are not only for snacks. Pupils often have the same teacher for 6 years in a row. The education system in Finland is one of the best in the world.

2. Education in the UK

     School in the UK begins at the age of five. Children younger than five can go to nursery school. Pupils go to primary school for six years. Primary school in the UK is divided into infant school (the first two years) and junior school (the following 4 years). After primary school, pupils go to secondary school. The school year consists of three terms. Students have about 12-13 weeks of holiday per school year. In primary school, classes run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m five days a week , from Monday to Friday. There are usually about 30 pupils in one class. The typical subjects are English, Maths, Physical Education (PE), modern languages (French, German, Spanish).

       School in Australia begins at the age of five. Schooling lasts for 13 years. Australian schools do not only educate pupils. They prepare them for life.
       The school year in Australia starts late January or early February and it ends in December. Most schools have three term. Each term lasts about 10 weeks. Usually there are four holiday breaks between terms: in December (about six weeks) for Christmas, in April (two weeks) for Easter, and two more breaks in July and October (both also about two weeks). School hours are usually from 9:00 to 15:00. Lunch is eaten at school. English is the official language of learning.

      My name is Nicole. I am from Australia and I love my school! It is a school for artists. It's very small. There are seven boys and seven girls in my class. We've got really nice teachers. The students like them! There aren't any desks, pens or exercise books in my class. There are a lot of big tables and lamps in the classes. On the tables there are pension and paints: red, orange, brown, yellow, blue, green, white and purple. There aren't any black or grey paints there. Our teachers don't like these colours. - The First Decade of The Twentieth Century.
The reason for this is, firstly, they need to understand that the 1900s is the Twentieth Century. Secondly, that there are 10 decades in each century.
On the other hand, we need to define what we are aiming at. Is it the decades or the periods between the wars.
