Nice to see you here. I'm very glad that there are people, who can (moreover - want to ;-)) keep the ball rolling.
Since the New Year and the Christmas holidays are actually coming soon, of course, I wish both all the oldtimers (including Stacy and you :)) and rare guests of our club good luck and health, success at work or everywhere else, and not to give up in any situation, one can be drawn into. Let all our dreams (or, at least, the most important of them ;-)) come true and on time, if possible!

Just imagine, last month I started learning ArmeniaN) I really enjoy it)
I had lots of plans for the weekend but I'd rather stay at home with my wife. That rain, you know...
I still have to repair the flat here and there and I'd like to study Armenian for a while :)

;-\ It is not that easy either...My suppositions are as follows: it is likely to be a man (by no means a woman :) ), but his (I mean Andy's) avatar is not his real, but another person's photograph. The only two possible options are Yemi and Sergey, with the latter being more probable (mostly because of the style of the messages, which is more typical of him).
Am I right or not? ;-)
P.S. Frankly, I am somewhat disappointed..
I was really glad to have met another experienced English speaker, willing to join our club sooner or later, but he tuned out to be a mere teacher of the school...
P.P.S. BTW, Is Iren a teacher too? ;-)

The ability to make 'small talk' is highly valued. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures - and rightly so! Small talk gets friendships started and 'breaks the ice' before important business meetings and other events.

First of all, making small talk is not difficult only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. However, small talk can be especially difficult for some learners because making small talk means talking about almost anything - and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics.
Most English learners have excellent vocabulary in specific areas, but may have difficulties discussing topics they are unfamiliar with because of a lack of appropriate vocabulary.
This lack of vocabulary leads to some students 'blocking'. They slow down or stop speaking completely because of a lack of self-confidence.

Small talk changes slightly when you're with strangers as opposed to people at a business function or party. Strangers, in this case, refers to people you don't know who you see out and about somewhere in the course of your daily routine. Since you don't know a thing about them, choose general subjects that allow anyone to comment on.
What's the benefit to chatting with strangers? It gives you practice for those times in life (like first dates or important business functions) where you'll need to make a really great impression. If you're used to talking with people on a routine basis, you won't be tripped up when you're nervous. Also, as Will Rogers once said, "A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet." You never know how friendships will develop, so it's a good idea to be prepared to make the most of any opportunity.
Here are some ice breakers that work well with strangers.
Comment on Something in the News
Avoid topics like politics, sex, or religion, as those topics are more suited for conversation between friends. Instead, bring up a popular subject that has been getting a lot of play in the news. It's a good idea to read the paper or go online to check out the latest newsworthy topics before you leave the house so you're prepared with something to say.

Missing Out on "Big Talk" Opportunities
The whole point of small talk is to find a possible "in" toward deeper conversation. The art of small talk involves listening and recognizing clues toward opportunities that get into a topic more intensely. It's these types of conversations that will allow you to get to know someone and really figure out if you can bond with them.
Some folks just keep mentioning small talk subjects, even when it's clear that their new friend wants to chat more about a specific subject. Remember, small talk isn't about filling time, it's about looking for clues that can lead you somewhere else conversationally.

The weather is often mentioned as something you should avoid when making small talk, but I think it is still a good opener with strangers, if you use some detail. Rather than say, "Nice weather we're having," say instead, "What a warm day it turned out to be! What are you doing this afternoon? Are you able to get out and enjoy it?"
Or, ask them about something regarding the weather, like: "I wasn't able to find out if it was going to rain. We've got a picnic coming up so I sure hope not. Did you happen to catch the forecast?"

If shyness is indeed a fear of negative judgment, one way to combat this is to find activities where the focus is not on engaging in conversation right away, but on the activity itself.
When you join a club where the focus shifts from meeting people to doing an activity, you can engage in conversation slowly over time. You won't feel pressured to connect, but will be encouraged to do so as part of the activity which you share in common with everyone else there. Fear of judgment in this case, is limited.
Some activities to try:
Book groups: The focus is on the books you're reading and not on you. What's more, book clubs have a lot of introverts in them, which will allow you to remain quiet without feeling odd. You can add your opinions or just listen to what others shy. Either way, you'll be part of the activity and will be meeting people slowly month by month.
Volunteering: What better way to take the focus off of you than by giving your time for a cause? Helping out others also boosts your self-esteem.
Sports: Playing a sport makes you part of a team. That in and of itself gives you an "in" with new people.
Classes: A class is always a good way to meet new people because you'll be expanding your mind, learning something new, and interacting with people on projects. (Seems to me, it sounds like our English Club!)

Bite Your Tongue! Еще одна отличная фраза – «прикуси свой язык» (мягкое выражение). Используется, когда человеку рекомендуют успокоиться. Идет в ногу со следующей идиомой.
Put a Sock In It А это выражение более резкое – означает «заткнуться». Идея понятна – если засунуть себе носок в рот, человек не сможет говорить. Наверное, ее используют, когда предыдущая идиома не сработала.

в английском языке есть выражение FOR WHOM HOW (фо хум хау) и переводится оно элементарно - для кого как. "хум - хау" в английском языке я не знаю, тем более, чтобы оно писалось через дефис. если оно есть - расскажите!
