Some facts illustrating difference between British and American English. First of all both these languages sound differently. Often Americans don't say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say "I dunno" instead of "I don't know". Or they may say"Whaddya say?" instead of "What did you say?" The British are more careful in their speech.

А вы знаете, что все говорящие I dunno and WHADDYA say - обитатели трущоб и, уж точно, - не та категория американцев , чей прононс стоит популяризировать среди наших обучающихся?

Dear Friends,
you have very interesting discussion here, let me add one more example of American English usage:
I woke up this morning and thought, “TGIF!” I have been looking forward to the weekend and all I need to do is to get through one more day of work.
TGIF – “thank goodness it’s Friday”; a phrase used on Fridays to show that one is happy that the weekend is coming
* This week has been difficult, but this weekend should be a lot of fun. TGIF!

There are a number of interesting Anglo-American differences in the use of certain prepositions. The British talk to their friends, the Americans talk with them. The Americans check out the situation, while the British check up on it. If the British do not go out, they stay at home. The Americans stay home.
-
Dear Friends,
which way do you like more? Does American way sound easier?
pls share with us

Do you thinK you can do it?

We speak English. И нас понимают, когда мы заграницей. И зачем обязательно perfect? Сейчас и по-русски все говорят с ошибками.
-
По-русски тоже говорят с ошибками, Вы правы, но с такими людьми все меньше и меньше хочется продолжать общение, Вам так не кажется?
Невольно тянешься к образованным ;D

Speaking proper English needs practice. The famous English proverb says: "Practice makes it perfect".
To make something perfect takes a lot of time and effort. We combine effort, good time and good company. As far as the time is concerned you spend it happily and usefully in the club.
-
Psychology says that you need 80 repetitions of a new word or word combination ( in different situations) if you want to be able to handle it easily in your speech. Don't believe the people who tell tou tales about how quickly you can learn to speak English properly (in one-two-three... months' time) and understand it at one hearing. In has never happened to anybody!
Learning English takes time and constant effort. Accept it and come to the club where professionals will teach you and help you to relax and have a good time.

Remember - Practice makes it perfect

How long do we have to have practice? Папа говорит, что язык надо практиковать всю жизнь! Но это же нереально.
-
Oчень даже реально! You often go abroad. You meet foreigners here, in this country. You communicate with them. You watch English and American films.
English has become language №1 in the world. Nothing doing.

I always combine the practice of the English language with traveling around the new countries - pleasures and benefits together!

Hello, Quick Sand! I like your approach to English. Living with it. Yes! I think we all should, though I don't exactly know how to do it. I can't help mentioning that living with a girl is more understandable to me.

I think we all should, though I don't exactly know how to do it.
Just start your morning with New York Times by clicking it. Or you can elect any one more suitable to your taste. Also I see very useful to dwell on English root and look in "Etymonline.com" to check the origen of the words. This morning occasionally I run over Spanish word "culata" (казенная часть оружия) and saw that it is a part of Russian word "при-клад" then I went to English "butt" (Толстый конец чего-либо; торец, комель (дерева); приклад. Удар (головой, рогами); притык, стык; петля, навес двери. Ударять головой,; ныткаться; бодаться, выдаваться; соединять впритык) by the way I've understood that English "butter" is from '"butt" (по-русски взбивать) so English "butt" is equal to Russsian "бить". It's a real fun. Repeat my way and may be by the way you also find a butt on which nobody sat before you. And these days I like to listen music on so-school.ru up to the last sound. Share it. Does it sound well?

These two languages are both rich and gave the world great writers, poets and
playwrights. Which of them is easier to speak? We are born to Russian, aren't we? The answer to the question is evident!

:-) I think, Irina was talking about somewhat different things (i.e. particularities of spoken versions of the languages or something like that).
To my mind, one of the main differences is that American English (I consider its GA version as the most recognised one) is "rhotic", whilst British (in its RP-version) is "non-rhotic" - it means that Americans usually pronounce the letter "R" in all positions, including the ones before consonants or at the end of words), while RP-speakers pronounce it only before vowels.
There are also a lot of differences in vocabulary (some of them are slight and can sometimes be neglected, others are much more significant).
Just compare "pants" and "trousers" or the way the word "car"is pronounced etc..
Of course, the complete list of those differences has not been made in this message :-)))

It's a good answer and I also prefer to speak English following grammar and standard English phonetics. But it seems to be a very professional but too instrumental approach. I see that the English language provides us with deep insight into our native language - into Russian. It's very interesting to find out that English and Russian words have much in common in the origin and even now under their bottom line. For example, the Russian word "высь" and English "height" are distant but cousins like "вес" and ""weight". It's a fun to see that they are much closer than we are ready to accept.

US President Barack Obama promised to dig in his heels… And we have been seeing for nine days what it means. For the first time problems with the heel had Achilles (hope you know him) and now again it caused something wrong – The USA is near default which Obama calls chaos and catastrophe. And Warren Buffet likened default to a nuclear bomb. Can the USA, strong and invincible, fell down like Achilles in the zenith of their glory? Use your English watching in details this greatest drama for nothing because you will never see it at a theatre for money. VM

what's the difference between a cookie and a biscuit? 8)
The difference between a biscuit and a cookie is that a cookie is usually round, sweet and it usually contains nuts, oats, raisins, chocolate chips, whereas a biscuit normally comes in different shapes, ovals, squares and it is usually butter based, coated with sugar or plain. Cookies are hard and thin, while biscuits are crispy, slightly soft, and can be thick. ::)

(Hints on learning English for beginners)

-
The notion of "proper English" can be difficult to define. There are native speakers of English all over the world, and non-native speakers of English outnumber native speakers 3 to 1. Regional dialects of English are as varied as the speakers themselves. Yet, most English speakers know "improper" English when they hear it. Speaking proper English does not always mean following a strict set of rules. Instead, it is important to be understood and to know how to speak accurately, clearly and appropriately according to the situation.

в образовательном процессе другие мотивы :)

Тут все индивидуально - зависит и от того, что человек помнит, приходя к нам, и от наличия языкового барьера... Но главное, что это происходит - у кого-то раньше, у кого-то позже, но если постоянно тренироваться - то обязательно!

Отличие Everyday от Every Day
Путаница между “every day” и “everyday” – очень распространенная ошибка в английском языке, как в устной, так и в письменной речи.
Основное правило: если не уверены, как правильно написать в каком-то конкретном случае, ищите рядом с «эвридеем» существительное. Нашли? Если да, то пишем “everyday”. Ответ отрицательный? Значит, правильно – “every day”.
Everyday произносится и пишется как одно слово и является прилагательным, соответственно, располагается обычно перед существительным:
— Professional sportsmen have an everyday training program.
— My everyday root from home to work occupies approximately an hour.
— Formal suit is everyday clothes of office workers.
Every day - сочетание двух слов, являющихся формой наречия и выражающих время. “Every day” обычно – обстоятельство, размещаемое в начале или в конце предложения:
— If you want to be strong and healthy, you should train every day.
— Every day I spent one hour to get my work.
— It is so awful to wear business suit at work every day.
Обратите внимание: большая часть прилагательных в английском может использоваться и после существительного (The sunset was beautiful. This screenplay is amazing.) Однако в случае с “everyday” это не работает, например:
— Time for practical lessons is everyday at 7p.m. – неверно. В этом случае нужно писать “every day”, так как идет прямое указание на время. Таким образом, запоминаем, что после глагола “to be” всегда пишется и говорится “every day”.

American Holidays
There are many holidays in the USA which are celebrated from year to year. American people enjoy having holidays, especially if they are public. During such holidays children don’t go to school and adults don’t work. Perhaps, the most favourite public holidays in the USA are Christmas and New Year. Christmas season starts on December the 25th and continues till New Year celebrations. Many families arrange parties on New Year’s Eve. It’s also the time of present exchange. Another important American holiday is Independence Day, which is celebrated every year on July the 4th. This holiday celebrates the day when the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. The exact date was July the 4th, 1776. Thanksgiving Day is another interesting American holiday. It is celebrated every fourth Thursday of November. At this time in 1621 the Pilgrim Fathers celebrated their first harvest festival in America. Since then Americans always celebrate Thanksgiving to thank God for their harvest. There is one more interesting autumn holiday in the USA. It’s the Day of All Saints, known in the world as Halloween. Children are especially fond of this holiday. It is celebrated on October 31st. Typical Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, dressing up in different costumes, craving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, telling scary stories, etc. November 11th is Veteran’s Day in the USA. This holiday is dedicated to people who fell courageously in the World Wars. There is one special holiday which is celebrated by Americans on February 22nd. It’s Washington’s Birthday. This day is also known as President’s Day. George Washington was the first president of the USA, so he is dearly respected by American nation.

Is the phrase 'you need believe it' proper English?
No. "You must believe it" or "you need to believe it" is a better phrase.
Is it proper English to say I can never or I can't never?
Proper usage of this phrase is "I can never..." If you want to use "can't" instead it would be "I can't ever..."
Is it proper English to say it went good?
No it is "went well".
-
Is hi proper English?
Of course.
A different answer: The interjection "Hi!" is an informal greeting which is very widely used. Because of its informal nature, you would not use it in greeting, for example, a person of great authority. Nonetheless, its wide usage makes it very much part of the English language.
What constitutes "proper" will depend on your definition. Do you mean "formal", or do you mean "used by English speakers"?

Learn and study phrases
Many students learn vocabulary and try to put many words together to create a proper sentence. It amazes me how many words some of my students know, but they cannot create a proper sentence. The reason is because they didn't study phrases. When children learn a language, they learn both words and phrases together. Likewise, you need to study and learn phrases.
If you know 1000 words, you might not be able to say one correct sentence. But if you know 1 phrase, you can make hundreds of correct sentences. If you know 100 phrases, you will be surprised at how many correct sentences you will be able to say. Finally, when you know only a 1000 phrases, you will be almost a fluent English speaker.
The English Speaking Basics section is a great example of making numerous sentences with a single phrase. So don't spend hours and hours learning many different words. Use that time to study phrases instead and you will be closer to English fluency.
Don't translate
When you want to create an English sentence, do not translate the words from your Mother tongue. The order of words is probably completely different and you will be both slow and incorrect by doing this. Instead, learn phrases and sentences so you don't have to think about the words you are saying. It should be automatic.
Another problem with translating is that you will be trying to incorporate grammar rules that you have learned. Translating and thinking about the grammar to create English sentences is incorrect and should be avoided.

С городами все просто – артикль не нужен. Единственное исключение, которое нужно запомнить – это the Hages, Гаага. Или можно не запоминать, если не планируете часто упоминать в разговоре этот город международных симпозиумов и интернациональных конференций. ;D
Moscow is the city of contrast: the reflection of $200,000 cars in the dirty windows of grey blocks stuffed with small apartments. (Guide for Moscow visitors)
Есть к этому правилу одно дополнение. В популярном обороте «the city of» артикль перед city нужен всегда – the city of New York, the city of London. Кстати сказать, это относится ко всем географическим объектам, в которых есть of – например, the Statue of Liberty, Статуя свободы.
The city of Bobruisk – one of the oldest cities in Belarus, large industrial and cultural center.

Is just gotten back a correct grammar?
In this case we would need to know the full sentence with the subject. For instance, if you say I have or I've...it would be correct to use gotten. However, although the sentence may be correct if you are using "have" in the sentence, the best way to say this sentence would be to eliminate have altogether. Then "gotten" would not be correct. You would say, "I just got back" or "We just got back". Usually when you are using have in the sentence (other than stating possession) than the use of "gotten" can be the correct usage for the word "got". In this sentence, since "back" is not something that is/was possessed, than gotten is the correct term if you are using "have" in the sentence. For example, if you were to say "we've gotten the answer", than that would be incorrect because it is showing possession. In this case you would want to say, "we've got the answer". There are many other rules pertaining to the use of gotten.

Who and Whom
Who (Кто) – это субъектное местоимение наряду с «он», «она», «оно», «мы» и «они». Это слово используется тогда, когда местоимение выступает в качестве предмета предложения. Whom (Кого) же относится к объектным местоимениям наряду с «ним», «ее», «это», «нас» и «их». Whom используется, когда местоимение выступает в качестве объекта предложения. Если вы сомневаетесь, замените Who на местоимение «он» или «она», а Whom – на местоимение «ним» или «ее». Например, «I consulted an attorney whom I met in New York. cf., I consulted him» (Я консультировался с адвокатом, которого встретил в Нью Йорке.

That is a very good question Dash! We lay more emphasis on British English at our ENGLISH CLUB. Nevertheless, considering the fact that American English is so to say the talk of the town, we also show and explain the similarities and differences between both, to a reasonable extent. This way, people don't get lost or confused wherever they use the language.
-
I think in real life we meet people from different countries and they all have their special accent. there's no two ways about it
but we are to understand them and to be able to communicate with them

Часто русские добавляют “s” в таких общепринятых выражениях, как “No comment”, “No problem” и “Thank God”, причём в последнем случае “s” добавляют к глаголу. Эти выражения следует употреблять без “s”! Но по каким-то странным причинам неформальное выражение “No probs” используется во множественном. Говорить “No prob” неправильно.

Used to
The phrase used to is used to describe an action which continued habitually or for some period of time in the past but it does not take place now.
He used to smoke. (He smoked for some time in the past, but he doesn't smoke now.)
He used to be an officer.
Translate it, please.

It's high time we started speaking PROPER English! The English Club is back and in full force! I'm delighted to inform our dear members that we've been privileged to have a wonderful Teacher with us at our Club. He is Vyacheslav. I am sure you all will have a even more pleasant time. We meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, between the hours of 7 and 9 pm. You are most cordially invited!

Yemi, I know that you love playing scrabble! Read about Brett Smitheram, a recruitment consultant from East London, who was crowned the World Scrabble Champion on Sunday after he drew the letters for the word “braconid.”
Here is the link http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/06/world/europe/braconid-wins-the-day-and-the-world-scrabble-championship-2016.html?src=me (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/06/world/europe/braconid-wins-the-day-and-the-world-scrabble-championship-2016.html?src=me)
Did you guys know that scrabble was invented during the Great Depression by Alfred Mosher Butts, an unemployed architect, who conjured up the game from his fifth-floor walk-up apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens?! Mr. Butts’s research for creating the game included studying the front page of The New York Times and doing painstaking calculations of how often letters were used.
It's a wonderful word game that allows you to practice foreign langauges!

Няня заставила, вы на каникулах,занимайтесь английским. Вот пишем.
We want to speak proper English. We want to speak proper English. We don't want to spend much time on it.
English is a foreign language. It's difficult to speak English.
Что-то в этой рубрике мало людей. Похоже, никто не хочет to learn proper English. Одни мы дураки тут толчёмся, выполняем нянино распряжение.

Dear children,
Don't be upset, we can talk here. I am really proud of you, even during your summer vacations you still found some time to improve your language skills. Your nurse must be a strict woman, but, in order to become clever, intelligent and successful you need to study every day! Nevertheless, don't forget to have a rest as well, it's summer, after all! Live and Learn!

Няне очень понравился ваш ответ, ДАС. But she thinks you must speak and learn English every day bеcause you can forget it.

Спасибо, ДАс. Но к сожалению няня сказала, что будет продолжать делать это по-русски и говрит, что по-английски не звучит. Может предложите еще какой-нибудь вариант.

To Yemi
A Plan for the English Club (in case that you and Dmitriy can invite people)
1. Acquaintance Game.
2. Watching an extract from a film ( maybe “The Roman Holiday”, because it is strikingly
attractive to any age).
3. Dividing into two groups (depends on the level) and working on a text “at the speed of the
group and their desire to do - talking, translating, reading, grammar etc….”.
4. Getting together and doing “free speech” on the subjects they have just covered. Yemi's
stories could be introduced.
5. Singing or any other psychologically positive action to call it a day.
-
My English is not very well. But not so bad.
-
Practice makes perfect!
-
Practice makes perfect!
Doing something over and over makes a person better at it,
but very few people are capable of it nawadays.
-
Ann, unfortunately, You are right..
-
Most people don't care if they speak proper or unproper English or Russian. It's not a matter of pride and good education and background any more. They just don't care.....
-
Ann, It's really difficult to disagree with you here. Though I consider an ability to communicate the meaning to be the most important one, sometimes listening to one's crooked grammar is "a pain in the ears".
-
Giving our students seven lessons per week we definitely must provide them with proper English. I wonder why we can't.

But we can! Such big amount of classes per week allows our students to have enough practice in all skills: reading, listening, writing, speaking etc

Could you give some concrete examples of ou success, DAS?
-
Could you give some concrete examples of ou success, DAS?
I can only speak for students from my groups, so I can confirm their pronunciation and intonation and overall listening skills have become much better (especially of those ones who drill the flash drive systematically). Moreover, during the course of our lessons we read many texts and learn to reflect upon them, write essays and personal letters hence improving both receptive and productive abilities of our pupils. Furthermore, we devote the last phases of the lessons to speaking (according to the general plan), discuss up-to-date issues with advanced groups and provide the beginners with controlled speaking practice. Nevertheless, grammar of certain students still leaves much to be desired, particularly during free speech activities, some of them tend to forget about accuracy when concentrating on fluency and last but not the least, some of them need to have their vocabulary enlarged.
-
My English is not very well. But not so bad.
Геракл,darling, I admire your English!
-
To DAS about the flash. Could you possibly describe how you work with it? You write "especially those ones who drill the flash drive systematically". And those ones who don't? What are your actions in this case?
-

We use the flash during warming up activities to read the texts at the speed of the speaker and also when we read various texts from the "additional material and speech exercises" the flash is used to listen to the texts and grasping the gist. Those ones who don't listen to the flashdrive form the minority but in rare cases I talk to such students individually after the lesson or if the issue remains - get in touch with their parents via their classroom teachers (To be frank, I did it only once, because, as a rule, there is no necessity in that).

I missed it here, but I never skip drill at lessons.

To DAS about the flash. Where are you with the flash now? Any progress?
-
Ann, Currently, we are working on Unit 7 (In the Hotel) in the "Beginners' Course" and on Unit 4 (Meals) in the "Main Course".
At the lessons we use the flash for: 1) reading texts during the warming-up activities
2) drilling grammar exercises in headphones
3) listening to the texts in the "Additional Material" for reproducing the gist and giving the details
Moreover, all of the students were registered on the forum, so they are free to listen to the audiomaterials in the corresponding branch. There are two more new pupils who haven't yet got the flash, I will take care of it next week.

All the flaws were eliminated after the flash drives had been distributed among the students. Reading skills during warming-up and other activities have significantly improved and it is much easier to identify those, who skip working on "flash" from time to time. Furthermore, flash is of a great help for those who have problems with their homework.

I'm happy you do. Besides categorising, Yemy and Alexander Yurievich are improving the recording itself so that you, English teachers, could use the audio exercises as a home work which is absolutely necessary. The grammar and vocabulary drill is automatic and meant to be worked on by the students themselves.

Back to the proper English. We continue to neglect the means we are having to teach students the proper English they are supposed to have after finishing our school. The audio materials are still in disorder. We have a new IT man (room 218)
who can help us prolong those bloody intervals.
I hope he' ll do it without special help. In case he needs the one ( to supervise if he is in the right way as far as the length of the pauses is concerned) I hope you'll particiipate.

To DAS. The plan is accepted. But one remark: how do you bring it to the students that the work they have done is either good or bad. And when?
And a question: what Jack London does in "Sports"? How did you stick it to it? As far as I remember he was a hunter.
-
To DAS. The plan is accepted. But one remark: how do you bring it to the students that the work they have done is either good or bad. And when?
I do it 5-10 minutes before the end of the lesson (point 7 in the plan). We either discuss the mistakes orally or do the correction of exercises in writing.
And a question: what Jack London does in "Sports"? How did you stick it to it? As far as I remember he was a hunter.
It was just a sample of my lesson plan for Thursday, because on Friday students had to hand in the essays on " The Biography of Jack London" and prepare the monologues on the same topic. Usually, during this part of the lesson we use the texts from the Additional Material part of the main book.

Grammar is being taught according to the given instructions. Students now have better awareness of the present tenses but still mix them from time to time. With more practice it will get better.

Don't stop making them practise them (the tenses). The big tables are being prepared, and the idea is to place them all on the walls of the sound laboratories.
The speech patterns which are on the walls of room 409 should also be repeated regularly, in small portions, during the clubs. Please, speak to ASDFG about it. We've discussed the matter lately.
There is one more piece of information for you in the "Знаете ли вы" branch.

Ann, I completely agree with you, revision is the key to success.
How are things going on now?
We had only 1 club since the last time we had this talk, as the last club was dedicated to the "Day of Love and Kindness". Nevertheless, we worked on the speech patterns during the lessons and now students greet and thank the teachers and each other more properly. Little by little, they will get used to doing it 'on the tip of the tongue'.
As far as the tables of tenses are concerned, we have been working on present tenses for a while and out pupils can use them correctly. However, some of them fail to distinguish between them sometimes. Therefore, we are going to continue andt I can assure you that these activities have improved their grammar skills noticeably. Still, there is a lot to be done.. We'll keep it up.
