There's hardly an Englishman who hasn't played cricket at some time or other. The Englishmen just can't help playing it. Many of them start playing cricket at an early age and are very good at it. Like football cricket isn't usually played by women.
To many foreign spectators cricket appears a slow and rather boring game, but in fact it requires a lot of muscle and a quick eye.
There's a great deal of amateur club cricket as well as professional "country" cricket. At top level players have to be extremely fit and talented, but the amateur can get good exercise even at his first attempt.
Some of the countries of the Commonwealth send national teams to play each other in the so-called "Test Match", which usually goes on for five days and is closely followed by all the fans of the country.
The story is told of an American arriving in Britain for the first time. At Victoria Railway Station he saw the newspapers with headlines like "Great Crisis for England" and "England’s Position Hopeless". He thought that a war was about to break out, or that there was another great economic crisis. In fact, the newspaper headlines were about a test match being played between England and Australia.

The sports program in the Russian Army is more than recreation and more than something which is meant to keep you physically fit. It serves to improve your physical fitness, to foster courage and self-control, the hallmarks of a soldier.
The main sports in the Army are gymnastics, obstacle course,  hand-to-hand fighting, skiing, high-pace run and track and field events. These are the sports which develop different skills necessary for a serviceman.
Besides these sports, which are a must for body, a serviceman can participate in a sport to his liking. For this he joins one of the many athletic clubs which specialize in the following sports: football, basketball, handball, officers’ pentathlon /gymnastics, cross-country race, shooting, swimming, skiing/, etc…
Nowadays karate is becoming very popular with the young serviceman. Athletes in this field have already won a great number, of honours, for the Army, competing in the Moscow and Russian championships.
The Army has the finest sports facilities in the country. A. What teenagers feel and do is also of interest to governments. The following facts are taken from the official survey. Almost 60 per cent of British teenagers have a part-time job. Life in a city is much easier than in the country — developed transport system, sewerage system, sports clubs, shopping mails, etc. Modern men are too sophisticated for simple country pleasures. There is far more entertainment in a city than in the country. Cities offer high concentration of good things in life: big stores, restaurants, theatres, cinema, art galleries. Life is more convenient in a city, as services are always better there. It is possible to go out, make friends and never be cut off from them by weather conditions. Generally, people do not mind what you do in a city. In the country, everybody knows you and expects you to live and behave in a certain way.

 Moreover, life is never dull in a city; people always have something to do there. It is needless to say that citizens are more advantaged in education. Students have museum classes and excursions. They can attend lectures and preparatory courses, and therefore have more chances to enter this or that university. After graduating from a university, the residents of big cities are more likely to find a prestigious and well-paid job. They are more communicative, more experienced. They usually have more friends and relatives to help them. In a city, people have more chances to succeed.

Life in a city is much easier than in the country — developed transport system, sewerage system, sports clubs, shopping mails, etc. Modern men are too sophisticated for simple country pleasures. There is far more entertainment in a city than in the country. Cities offer high concentration of good things in life: big stores, restaurants, theatres, cinema, art galleries. Life is more convenient in a city, as services are always better there. It is possible to go out, make friends and never be cut off from them by weather conditions. Generally, people do not mind what you do in a city. In the country, everybody knows you and expects you to live and behave in a certain way. Moreover, life is never dull in a city; people always have something to do there.

It is needless to say that citizens are more advantaged in education. Students have museum classes and excursions. They can attend lectures and preparatory courses, and therefore have more chances to enter this or that university. After graduating from a university, the residents of big cities are more likely to find a prestigious and well-paid job. They are more communicative, more experienced. They usually have more friends and relatives to help them. In a city, people have more chances to succeed.

Keeping Fit

Most young people go in for sports because they enjoy it. It may be walking, cycling, skiing or skating. It may be a game of some kind -  football, hockey, golf or tennis.
Most older people go in for sports because they understand they must have some form of physical activity. Muscles need to be used. If not you are left with an undermuscled body and lack of energy.
To keep oneself physically fit, doctors recommend 30 to 60 minutes of exercise daily as a minimum. The best activities for this are running, swimming, cycling, and cross-country skiing.

A. Five-year-old Mark Harris from Bristol fell 70 feet from a bridge into the river Avon when he was running after his dog. The river carried him towards a waterfall and threw him onto some rocks. After fifty days at sea their life raft was beginning to break up. Suddenly a fishing boat saw them and picked them up.

D. Thirteen-year-old Thomas Gregory from London is the youngest person to swim the English Channel. He swam 31 miles in just 11 hours 55 minutes. He drank hot tomato soup because he felt so cold in the water. Often he could not see anything because the sun was shining in his eyes, and that was the worst thing. He was very pleased when he finally arrived on the beach in France, where his parents were waiting for him.

E. Pop music in Britain is influenced by music from all over the world. Many teenagers in our survey liked reggae, which comes from Jamaica. Boys also enjoyed dancing and listening to Black-American rap. Some music in Britain is a mixture of styles. Pop music is also influencing traditional music. Recently some young musicians of Asian origin have started to mix bhangra (traditional music from the Punjab region) with Western pop.
