Hi, everybody!
Is there anybody alive here?
A mounth and a half have passed since the last message was posted in this forum.. but I still think we can find something interesting to talk over right here :-(
Regards,
Vladimir

Hello Vladimir,
You are quite correct and in fact there are lots of topics for discussion. The New year and Christmas celebrations are very much actual.
You can drop few lines of best wishes and so on!!!!!
Thanks for your keen observation Vladimir. Keep it up)))))))

Hello Yemi,
Nice to see you here. I'm very glad that there are people, who can (moreover - want to ;-)) keep the ball rolling.
Since the New Year and the Christmas holidays are actually coming soon, of course, I wish both all the oldtimers (including Stacy and you :)) and rare guests of our club good luck and health, success at work or everywhere else, and not to give up in any situation, one can be drawn into. Let all our dreams (or, at least, the most important of them ;-)) come true and on time, if possible!
Best regards,
Vladimir

Hi ND,

u're right)
Just imagine, last month I started learning ArmeniaN) I really enjoy it)
I had lots of plans for the weekend but I'd rather stay at home with my wife. That rain, you know...
I still have to repair the flat here and there and I'd like to study Armenian for a while :)
And we were invited to one's birthday party (7 pm) I ain't wanna go, but i have to :)
-
I wonder why a person should study a foreign language just for a while. How are you going to use that tiny bit of Armenian after you study it for a while?
On second thought.... Learning a new language could be used as a means of training brains.
-
I like your motto, Nd.

I think it's not hard to guess ;D

Hi,
I think it's not hard to guess ;D
;-\ It is not that easy either...My suppositions are as follows: it is likely to be a man (by no means a woman :) ), but his (I mean Andy's) avatar is not his real, but another person's photograph. The only two possible options are Yemi and Sergey, with the latter being more probable (mostly because of the style of the messages, which is more typical of him).
Am I right or not? ;-)
P.S. Frankly, I am somewhat disappointed..
I was really glad to have met another experienced English speaker, willing to join our club sooner or later, but he tuned out to be a mere teacher of the school...
P.P.S. BTW, Is Iren a teacher too? ;-)
Regards, Vladimir

Don't believe Andy. Nobody will tell you who and what he or she is. Making people believe and playing roles is part of the fun.

Anyway - not for me. I don't like it...I would even suggest people sign messages with their real names.

The ability to make 'small talk' is highly valued. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures - and rightly so! Small talk gets friendships started and 'breaks the ice' before important business meetings and other events.
-

First of all, making small talk is not difficult only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. However, small talk can be especially difficult for some learners because making small talk means talking about almost anything - and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics.
Most English learners have excellent vocabulary in specific areas, but may have difficulties discussing topics they are unfamiliar with because of a lack of appropriate vocabulary.
This lack of vocabulary leads to some students 'blocking'. They slow down or stop speaking completely because of a lack of self-confidence.
-
How to Improve Small Talk Skills
Here are some tips to improve small talk skills. Of course, making effective small talk means lots of practice, but keeping these tips in mind should improve overall conversational skills.
Do some research
Spend time on the Internet, reading magazines, or watching TV specials about the type of people you are going to meet. For example: If you are taking a class with students from other countries, take time after the first few days of class to do some research. They will appreciate your interest and your conversations will be much more interesting.
To be continued...
-
Use the Internet to gain specific vocabulary
This is related to doing research about other people. If you have a business meeting, or are meeting people who share a common interest (a basketball team, a tour group interested in art, etc.), take advantage of the Internet to learn specific vocabulary. Almost all businesses and interest groups have glossaries on the Internet explaining the most important jargon related to their business or activity.

Small talk changes slightly when you're with strangers as opposed to people at a business function or party. Strangers, in this case, refers to people you don't know who you see out and about somewhere in the course of your daily routine. Since you don't know a thing about them, choose general subjects that allow anyone to comment on.
What's the benefit to chatting with strangers? It gives you practice for those times in life (like first dates or important business functions) where you'll need to make a really great impression. If you're used to talking with people on a routine basis, you won't be tripped up when you're nervous. Also, as Will Rogers once said, "A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet." You never know how friendships will develop, so it's a good idea to be prepared to make the most of any opportunity.
Here are some ice breakers that work well with strangers.
Comment on Something in the News
Avoid topics like politics, sex, or religion, as those topics are more suited for conversation between friends. Instead, bring up a popular subject that has been getting a lot of play in the news. It's a good idea to read the paper or go online to check out the latest newsworthy topics before you leave the house so you're prepared with something to say.

They make quick dates in several restaurants in Moscow. People sit in front of each other and have small talks)
-
I heard about it! Is that where men switch to next table after 5 minutes talk to find somebody from the women that are sitting at the tables? Do you think it really works?
-
I've never tried that. It might work. If you have men and women in the building with food, drinks and music...
-
we can only guess - none of my acquaintances also never tried something like that
-
....and I probably would not even dared to go on such an event...

dating, the determination of the age of an object, of a natural phenomenon, or of a series of events. There are two basic types of dating methods, relative and absolute. In relative dating, the temporal order of a sequence of events is determined, allowing the investigator to surmise whether a particular object or event is older or younger than, or occurred before or after, another object or event. In absolute or chronometric dating, the investigator establishes the age of an object or event in calendar years.
-
Hello! How are you?
-
Missing Out on "Big Talk" Opportunities
The whole point of small talk is to find a possible "in" toward deeper conversation. The art of small talk involves listening and recognizing clues toward opportunities that get into a topic more intensely. It's these types of conversations that will allow you to get to know someone and really figure out if you can bond with them.
Some folks just keep mentioning small talk subjects, even when it's clear that their new friend wants to chat more about a specific subject. Remember, small talk isn't about filling time, it's about looking for clues that can lead you somewhere else conversationally.
-
Hello! How are you?
Hi!
Are you new here?
-
Yes I'm new here! Nice to meet you!
Did you hear about the crowd of people who support Ukraine in the center of Moscow? As I remember they are going to start their meeting today.
-
Crimea is voting on whether to rejoin Russia or stay with Ukraine but with more autonomy. Since the fall of Ukraine's pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych, Russian troops have in effect taken control of the majority ethnic-Russian region. Voters are expected to support leaving Ukraine, but Crimean Tatars are boycotting the poll.
I like Crimea and I'd be happy if it will join Russia!
-
Russian President Vladimir Putin has delivered a fiercely patriotic speech in the Kremlin, describing Crimea as an inseparable part of Russia.
Addressing a special joint session of parliament in Moscow, Mr Putin accused the West of reverting to Cold War containment by trying to stop the Ukrainian region joining Russia.
He defended Russia's actions in the crisis over the Black Sea peninsula, which has pushed relations with the West to a post-Cold War low.
-
I decided to go this summer in the Crimea!
-
Math is Magic! ;D
-
The weather is often mentioned as something you should avoid when making small talk, but I think it is still a good opener with strangers, if you use some detail. Rather than say, "Nice weather we're having," say instead, "What a warm day it turned out to be! What are you doing this afternoon? Are you able to get out and enjoy it?"
Or, ask them about something regarding the weather, like: "I wasn't able to find out if it was going to rain. We've got a picnic coming up so I sure hope not. Did you happen to catch the forecast?"
-
If shyness is indeed a fear of negative judgment, one way to combat this is to find activities where the focus is not on engaging in conversation right away, but on the activity itself.
When you join a club where the focus shifts from meeting people to doing an activity, you can engage in conversation slowly over time. You won't feel pressured to connect, but will be encouraged to do so as part of the activity which you share in common with everyone else there. Fear of judgment in this case, is limited.
Some activities to try:
Book groups: The focus is on the books you're reading and not on you. What's more, book clubs have a lot of introverts in them, which will allow you to remain quiet without feeling odd. You can add your opinions or just listen to what others shy. Either way, you'll be part of the activity and will be meeting people slowly month by month.
Volunteering: What better way to take the focus off of you than by giving your time for a cause? Helping out others also boosts your self-esteem.
Sports: Playing a sport makes you part of a team. That in and of itself gives you an "in" with new people.
Classes: A class is always a good way to meet new people because you'll be expanding your mind, learning something new, and interacting with people on projects. (Seems to me, it sounds like our English Club!)

"Do you have any pets?"
Let's face it, dog people are different from cat people. That's not a bad thing, nor does it mean that the two can't be good friends. But people with pets do like to talk about them, and it helps to share that in common with a friend. Dogs are also a great way for friends to be active and bond, and will provide new friends a variety of activities to do together.
Finding out if your pal has a pet can also give you a glimpse into their personal and professional life. Someone that answers with a "No way! I travel all the time," or "I don't have time for pets" will clue you in to what their free time and work life are like.

Millions of people connect on the Internet every day. Making a new tennis buddy, finding a date for Friday night, locating fellow saltwater aquarium fans, or finding your true love online...it really does work! Do you agree?
-
Some of us even live online rather than offline)

and I think these people, who live online don't even realize that they will never return the time they have spent to look through jokes and kitten pictures...

A Chip on Your Shoulder «To have a chip on one’s shoulder» означает обиду за прошлую неудачу, как будто пройдя через разрушенное здание, обломок от него остался с человеком на долгие годы.
Bite Off More Than You Can Chew
-
You Can’t Take It With You You Can’t Take It With You

nice ones to know!

“Over My Dead Body”
Tie the Knot

Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

-
A Leopard Can’t Change His Spots

An Arm and a Leg

Bite Your Tongue!
Put a Sock In It
-
It Takes Two to Tango

-
Everything But the Kitchen Sink Например, если кто-то говорит “The thieves stole everything but the kitchen sink!”
-
Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve
-
-
You Are What You Eat

Come this July I'm gonna out in a book
I'm gonna get her by hook or by crook
chorus:
Now I'm gonna get her (by hook or by crook)
It's just matter of time (by hook or by crook)
I'm gonna lay it on the line (by hook or by crook)
It's liek a baby with its rattle (by hook or by crook)
And like a cowboy with his saddle (by hook or by crook)

-
“It’s a Piece of Cake!”
-
An Arm and a Leg
-
Foam at the Mouth
-
By hook or by crook
You'll be 1st in his book
For an impaled affair
By hook or by crook...

-Hallo

To feel it in one’s bones —

- All right!
- Smiles.

"Why did the chicken cross the road?
- To get to the other side."

Two cowboys come upon an Indian lying on his stomach with his ear to the ground. One of the cowboys stops and says to the other, "You see that Indian?"
"Yeah," says the other cowboy.
"Look," says the first one, "he’s listening to the ground. He can hear things for miles in any direction."
Just then the Indian looks up. "Covered wagon," he says, "about two miles away. Have two horses, one brown, one white. Man, woman, child, household effects in wagon."
"Incredible!" says the cowboy to his friend. "This Indian knows how far away they are, how many horses, what color they are, who is in the wagon, and what is in the wagon. Amazing!"
The Indian looks up and says, "Ran over me about a half hour ago."

MORE ON EDUCATION & HOMESCHOOLING
Education is often considered the foundation for creating a well rounded and productive society, but this belief usually stems from being sure that those coming out of the education system are able to keep the cogs of society turning in order to maintain profit margins of large companies in a system that requires constant growth. Instead of having creative and out-of-the-box-thinking people, the current style of education creates more submissive, obedient and trained graduates so the current system is always maintained.

«If you ask me» (если Вы спросите меня). Это более естественный и вежливый вариант выражения своего мнения, вместо «I think» (я думаю) и «In my opinion» (по-моему мнению).
«Аs I was saying» (как я говорил).
«Speaking of» (Говоря о).

"Oh, yes! It is."
The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn.
From the corner of the divan of Persian saddlebags on which he was lying, smoking, as was his custom, innumerable cigarettes, Lord Henry Wotton could just catch the gleam of the honey-sweet and honey-coloured blossoms of a laburnum, whose tremulous branches seemed hardly able to bear the burden of a beauty so flame-like as theirs; and now and then the fantastic shadows of birds in flight flitted across the long tussore-silk curtains that were stretched in front of the huge window, producing a kind of momentary Japanese effect, and making him think of those pallid jade-faced painters of Tokio who, through the medium of an art that is necessarily immobile, seek to convey the sense of swiftness and motion.
The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the dusty gilt horns of the straggling woodbine, seemed to make the stillness more oppressive.
The dim roar of London was like the bourdon note of a distant organ.

The English say that they have three variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon, or when it rains all day long.

It's nice to be silent.
:applodisment: Silence is better than bullshit.
-
Глагол to talk в употреблении очень похож на глагол to speak. Please stop talking - Пожалуйста, перестаньте разговаривать (в этом случае нельзя было бы поставить глагол to speak).Did you talk to him yesterday? What are you talking about?
