George Orwell

George Orwell (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950) was one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. He was born as Eric Arthur Blair on 25 June 1903 in India. His father was a colonial civil servant, and the family were middle class, but not particularly well off. However, when Orwell was only a year old, his mother moved back to England, while his father stayed in India until 1912. Meanwhile, in 1911, George went to St Cyprians School in Eastbourne. In 1917 he won a scholarship to Eton but in 1921 he joined the British police in Burma. However, Orwell grew dissatisfied and he resigned in 1927.

George Orwell decided to become a writer. He also began living among the poor. In 1928 he journeyed to Paris. For a short time in 1932-1933 Orwell worked as a teacher in a small private school. In 1934 Orwell got a part time job in a second hand book shop. Meanwhile, in 1933 his first book was published "Down and Out in Paris and London". In 1934 his first novel "Burmese Days" was published. In 1935 George Orwell had another novel published. It was called "A Clergyman's Daughter". It was followed in 1936 by "Keep the Aspidistra Flying". Also in 1936 Orwell married Eileen. (She died in 1945).

In 1936 George Orwell was commissioned to write a book about poverty in northern England. "The Road to Wigan Pier" was published in 1937. Meanwhile, Orwell, a Socialist left for Spain in December 1936 to fight in the Spanish Civil War. (The civil war was between the left wing Republicans and the Fascist Nationalists. Some foreign volunteers took part). While there, he was wounded in the throat. Meanwhile, Communists began to arrest dissenters and Orwell was forced to flee from Spain. After arriving in Britain he wrote "A Homage to Catalonia", published in 1938.

However, by 1938 Orwell was suffering from tuberculosis. He spent the winter of 1938-1939 in Morocco. In 1939 another novel, "Coming Up For Air" was published. At the beginning of the Second World War George Orwell was rejected for military service but from 1941 to 1943 he worked for the BBC. In 1943 he became literary editor for the "Tribune a left wing magazine". Then, in 1945, his great satire Animal Farm was published. In 1949 his masterpiece 1984 was published. But his health was failing. In October 1949 George Orwell married his second wife Sonia. George Orwell died on 21 January 1950. He was only 46.

One of my favourite is John Galsworthy,
(14 August 1867 – 31 January 1933) who was an English novelist and playwright. His notable works include The Forsyte Saga (1906–1921) and its sequels, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932.

John Galsworthy  certainly should be remembered during our Love and Kindness Day. I remember I was never tired to reread his Forsyte Saga when I was in school.

Jonathan Swift was born on 30 November 1667 in Dublin, Ireland. One of the foremost prose satirist in the English language, was also a reputed political pamphleteer, essayist, poet and cleric. He lost his father early on in life and was mostly brought up by his uncle. However, with the advent of the Glorious Revolution in Ireland, he was forced to move to England, where he secured employment under Sir William Temple. Here he got a taste of high living and power play. As a young man he often travelled back and forth between Ireland and England. Later, he entered the Church of Ireland, which at that time was a poor cousin of the Church of England. To secure the rights of his church, he began to write pamphlets and finally entered the political arena. However, his political ambition was not long lived and he returned to England for a short period. Soon he was back to Ireland where he became the Dean of St. Patrick Cathedral, a position he held until his death. As a writer, most of his works were written under pseudonyms. Today, he is best remembered for his prose satire, ‘Gulliver’s Travel.’

Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 – 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric.
Swift is remembered for works such as A Tale of a Tub (1704), An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity (1712), Gulliver's Travels (1726), and A Modest Proposal (1729). He is regarded as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. He originally published all of his works under pseudonyms – such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, the Drapier – or anonymously. He was a master of two styles of satire, his deadpan, ironic writing style, particularly in A Modest Proposal, has led to such satire being subsequently termed "Swiftian"

Daniel Defoe was born in London in 1660, he was writer and journalist. He got a great fame for his novel Robinson  Crusoe and he is consider to be one of the earliest proponents of the novel as he helped to popularize this genre in Britain. He wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics, including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology, and the supernatural. He was also a pioneer of economic.
His birthdate and birthplace are uncertain, and sources offer dates from 1659–1662, with 1660 considered the most likely. His father James Foe was a prosperous tallow chandler and a member of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. His mother Annie had died by the time that he was about ten.
Defoe was educated at the Rev. James Fisher's boarding school in Dorking, Surrey. His parents dissenters, and around the age of 14 he attended a dissenting academy at Newington Green in London run by Charles Morton, and he is believed to have attended the Newington Green Unitarian Church.  During this period, the English government persecuted those who chose to worship outside the Church of England.
Defoe's first notable publication was An Essay upon Projects, a series of proposals for social and economic improvement, published in 1697. His most successful poem, The True-Born Englishman (1701), defended the king against the perceived xenophobia of his enemies, satirizing the English claim to racial purity.
From 1719 to 1724, Defoe published the novels for which he is famous (see below). He published a number of books decrying the breakdown of the social order, such as The Great Law of Subordination Considered (1724) and Everybody's Business is Nobody's Business (1725) and works on the supernatural, like The Political History of the Devil (1726), A System of Magick (1727) and An Essay on the History and Reality of Apparitions (1727).
One of the most his popular novels: Robinson Crusoe, The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Captain Singleton, Colonel Jack, A Journal of the Plague Year.
Daniel Defoe died on 24 April 1731, probably while in hiding from his creditors. He was interred in Bunhill Fields, (today Bunhill Fields Burial and Gardens), Borough of Islington, London, where a monument was erected to his memory in 1870. Defoe is known to have used at least 198 pen names.

The Biography of Charles Dickens
7 of February, Lendport, portsmur, Great Britain. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world’s most memorable fictional characters and is considered to be one of the greatest novelists. He was born on February 7th, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. His father was an office man, who worked hard to provide for his family. Charles had many brother and sisters. When he was 10, his family moved to London, where his father got into debtor’s prison. After that, Charles left school to work in a factory. For two years he worked in a dirty room pasting labels on bottles. Then he went to school for three more years. He had little formal education but still succeeded in life. Over his career he wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. He also worked for 20 years as an editor in a weekly journal. Dickens’ other merits include campaigns for children’s rights, education and other social reforms. He obtained international attention and fame in 1836 with a series of publications called “Pickwick Papers”. He used to be a young and poor reporter at that time, who immediately became a famous writer. Dickens published many other novels later. Among them “Oliver Twist”, “Dombey and Son”, “David Copperfield” and many others. His books are rather interesting to read. He mostly wrote about the hard life of poor people in Victorian England. Even though he lived more than a hundred years ago, people still read his books with pleasure. One of his most influential works ever written was “A Christmas Carol” novella. His fellow writers of that time highly praised his literary genius. Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, Chesterton were among them. Charles Dickens died on June 9th, 1870 with heart attack, insult and he was buried in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey.
