Re: News
« Ответ #428 : 13 февраля 2018, 15:05:43 »
14 February is St. Valentine’s Day. This started more than two thousand years ago, as a winter festival, on 15 February. On that day, people asked their gods to give them good fruit and vegetables, and strong animals.

When the Christians came to Britain, they came with a story about a man called Saint Valentine. The story is that Valentine was a Christian who lived in Rome in the third century. The Roman Emperor at the time, Claudius the Second, was not a Christian. Claudius thought that married soldiers did not make good soldiers, so he told his soldiers that they must not marry.

Valentine worked for the church, and one day he helped a soldier who wanted to marry. The emperor said that Valentine had to die because of this, and he sent Valentine to prison. But Valentine fell in love with the daughter of a man who worked there. Just before he died, he sent a note to this woman, and at the end of the note, he wrote: ‘Your Valentine.’ He died on 14 february, so the date of the festival changed from 15 to 14 February and the name changed to Saint Valentine’s Day.

In the early nineteenth century people started to give Valentine’s cards to the person they loved on 14 February. The cards had pictures of bird and flowers on them – perhaps red roses, the flower of love – and inside were words like these:

Roses are red, my love,
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet, my love,
But not as sweet as you.

People still send each other Valentine’s cards, but often they do not write their names inside: they just write ‘Be my Valentine’ or ‘From your Valentine’.

Some children give their friends or teachers cards or chocolates. A man will perhaps give red roses to the woman that he loves. A lot of people go out to restaurants for the evening and have dinner for two, and some people think it is a good day to marry.”

These are eternal topics and we will be able to work on them for quite a while! I  would just recommend watching different films in senior and junior groups.

We could think it over. By the way, I often remember "We Bought a Zoo". I wish there were another film like this one.

Getting back to the possible suggestions. The time flies, but  my favorite films which never fail to keep my spirits high remain:  Gentlemen Prefer Blonds, How to Marry a Millionaire and Lover, Come Back. The plot, the
language, the best American actors.....
Of course, there are many others, but these three are beautiful and kind COMEDIES.

New Year’s Day

New Year's Day, also called New Year's or New Year, is celebrated on January 1, the first day of the year. In pre-Christian Rome, the day was dedicated to Janus, the Roman god, after whom January was also named.

Nowadays, New Year's Day is the most celebrated public holiday, marked with fireworks and music as the clock strikes midnight.

People decorate New Year trees and their homes, make resolutions for the next year, visit their friends and families, exchange presents and congratulate each other. Eating traditional New Year dish is another widespread custom but dishes are different according to cultures.

Emperor Paul I
1796-1801

Emperor Paul I of Russia was born in St. Petersburg in 1754. His parents were Peter III and Catherine II. During his studies, he used to be an impatient student, though he adored reading books. Paul I studied religion, maths, dancing and warfare. He spoke Latin, French and German. Overall, his education was one of the best for those times.

When Paul turned 18, he hoped for a role in government but was given little responsibility by his mother. However, when Catherine died in 1796, Paul took the throne. Paul believed that Russia needed an absolute monarchy and began to reduce the power of the nobility, he also outlawed foreign books and travel outside the country. There were numerous decrees during his reign that were despised by the population.

Empress Catherine II The Great
           (1762-1796)

During her reign, Catherine II the Great extended the borders of the Russian Empire southward and westward at the expense of two powers – the Ottoman Empire and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In total, she added approximately 200,000 square miles to Russian territory.

Russo-Turkish Wars

Catherine made Russia the dominant power in south-eastern Europe after her first Russo-Turkish War against the Ottoman Empire (1768–1774), which saw some of the heaviest defeats in Turkish history. Catherine took the Crimea in 1783, nine years after as a result of her first war against the Turks. The Ottomans restarted hostile actions in the second Russo-Turkish War (1787–92) but were defeated once again.

Russo-Persian War

Catherine waged a new war against Persia in 1796 after they invaded Georgia and established rule over it. By mid-June, Russian troops overran without any resistance most of the territory of modern-day Azerbaijan, including its three principal cities. By November, they were stationed to attack mainland Iran. In that year the Empress of Russia died and her successor Paul I ordered the troops to retreat to Russia.
