Home assignment for Friday, May 15, 2026 (with Vladimir Vl.)
Unit 8 "Weather"

Orally:

1. Listen to the interview with a meteorologist couple more times. Learn all related vocabulary (including what I gave you last week in class). Learn Repack by heart (4 sentences related to the audio on weather forecasting).

2. Review all modals we have learnt by far (obligation and prohibition, as well as speculation and deduction). STUDY ONE PAGER HANDOUT "4B"!!!!! We covered this in class last Friday. You should know how to translate things like "вот-вот", "он будет здесь с минуты на минуту", "маловероятно, что...", "скорее всего..."  etc. Also, pay attention to the word order in sentences containing "probably" and "definitely".

There won't be any written assigments. Instead, spend as much time as you can reviewing grammar and going over all exercises on modals we have done by far. We have covered pretty much everything.

Also, I still expect homeworks from those who haven't completed them. Failure to submit them will only result in a very poor final grade.

Home assignment for Friday, May 8, 2026 (with Vladimir Vl.)
Unit 8 "Weather"

Orally:

1. Listen to the interview with a meteorologist couple more times. Learn all related vocabulary (including what I gave you last week in class). This will be on the final test. A RELATED ASSIGNMENT: Learn Repack by heart (4 sentences related to the audio on weather forecasting).

2. Review all modals we have learnt by far (obligation and prohibition, as well as speculation and deduction). By now you should know all subtleties and use modal verbs (both in present and past tenses) with confidence.

3. Go over weather voc one more time (it was a one page handout).

In Writing:

1. Do "adjectives and adverbs for speculation". It was a one page handout I distributed in class.

Home assignment for Friday, April 24, 2026 (with Vladimir Vl.)
Unit 8 "Weather"

Orally:

1. Listen to the interview with a meteorologist couple more times. Learn all related vocabulary (including what I gave you last week in class). You will be tested on that.

2. Review vocabulary on weather (it was a one pager handout, we did it in class). Learn new words.

3. Review, very thoroughly, modals for speculation and deduction. Make sure you understand very well different functions of different modal verbs (we covered this in class in details). This is the main and the only project for you in this quarter. How well you understand all subtleties will determine your final grade.

In Writing:

1. Home assignment for April 10th (Present modals) and for April 17th (Past modals) still due. April 24th will be an absolute deadline for that. Read both assignments very carefully! Don't forget about the Russian equivalent of each sentence. A good idea is to start with writing a Russian sentence with a certain speech pattern ("должно быть", "не может быть чтобы", "вероятно" etc) and only then translating it into English. Please write neatly and legibly! Leave spaces (a couple of lines) between each group of modal verbs.

Unit 8 "Weather"

Orally:

1. Listen to the interview with a meteorologist 3-4 times. Scroll down for the link. Learn all new words we put down in class.

2. Go over my handout on Modals of speculation and deduction (Present and Past tenses). Please spend some time on it, make sure you understand how verbs are formed in the present and in the past tense (I put down this framework in class on the board).

In Writing:

1. Weather (Vocabulary Bank, my handout).

2. Write no less than 7 sentences for each modal verb structure in the past tense (might have done, must have done, can't have done, should have done). I WILL NEED THE RUSSIAN EQUIVALENT AS WELL!!! I will make you redo this if you give me sentences without the Russian equivalent.
