Home assignment for Friday, May 15, 2026 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 12 "The Great Patriotic War"

Orally:

1. Listen to Historical accuracy audio and learn vocabulary.

2. Review modals. STUDY ONE PAGER HANDOUT "4B"!!!!! We haven't covered that in class. You should know how to translate things like "вот-вот", "он будет здесь с минуты на минуту", "маловероятно, что...", "скорее всего..."  etc. Also, pay attention to the word order in sentences containing probably and definitely.

3.  Study texts from Club 1 and 2 on WWI. Below are 4 questions that you should be able to answer rather intelligently in 5-7 sentences:

a) Germany is believed to have started WW1. And this opinion prevails in the historical literature. What makes people believe that it was Germany that was behind the start of WW1? Were there economic reasons for that?

b) The recent research findings prove that the true origins of the war are to be found not in Germany, but in England, which sought to inflict a strategic defeat on Germany. Why would England be so desperate to start the war? How was this organized? What was the plan and the ultimate goal of the British? Could GB achieve its goals on its own? Why?

c) What happened in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914? Was it an extraordinary event? How did Great Britain react to that? What was its (Britain's) ultimate goal?

d) Describe why Russia got involved in the war. What benefits did Nicholas II seek from participating in the war?

Home assignment for Friday, May 8, 2026 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 12 "The Great Patriotic War"

Orally:

1. Club 1 (texts 2 and 3) and Club 2 (focus on texts 1 and 3) on WWI. You should read texts very thoroughly, study them and be ready for the discussion.

2. Listen to Hist accuracy couple more times as I will source final test assignments partly from this audio (primarily on the vocabulary side).

3. Review Modals for speculation and deduction, including the last handout I gave you 2 weeks ago ("4B", the last section about adverbs and adjectives for speculation). It's a one pager, do exercises, we will just check them in class.

Here is the full list of assignments that will be graded and that will carry relatively high weights in your final grade for the quarter:

a. Home work on modals for speculation and deduction (for April 10).
b. Home work on historical accuracy (for April 17).
c. Club 1&2 on WW1 (discussion).
d. Final test.

Interim grades for class participation also matter.

Home assignment for Friday, April 24, 2026 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 12 "The Great Patriotic War"

Orally:

1. Historical accuracy in drama (links below). Please listen to the audio 2-3 times and be ready for the discussion of this topic. You should know his main points very well (a written assignment below will help you). Mind you, I will source some test assignments from his interview (primarily on the vocabulary side), so write out and learn all words that you do not know.

2. Review Modals for speculation and deduction. Finish working on adjectives and adverbs for speculation (started in class). It was a separate one-pager handout "4B".

In Writing:

1. Previous home assignment on modals for speculation and deduction is due. April 24th will be an absolute deadline for that. Only one student has turned it in. The rest of you will get "2д", which I will correct once you have completed the assignment. Read the assignment very carefully as it requires using both modals and conditionals.

2. In writing answer the following questions from the historical accuracy audio (no less than 4-5 sentences for each answer):

            - Why is it not always possible to be accurate when writing a historical drama or filming a historical movie? Does
a drama have to be bound by the rules of history?
            - Does the writer have a responsibility to represent any kind of historical truth?
            - How does that change (the writer's responsibility) if the drama becomes "the received version of the truth"?

3. I will also check how you did the gist for texts 2 and 3 of Club 1 on WWI.
