When we speak about a country we usually speak about big cities, famous rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. We don't often remember small things and places.
Our country used to be rich in small towns, which were populated by hard-working, kind, talented and devoted people and this was our most important natural resources and a great advantage.
Very few of them have survived on the vast territory of Russia.
One of them is Pereslavl-Zalessky, a small town situated on the bank of the Pleshcheyevo Lake.
What is it famous for? It is famous for its history which dated back to many thousands of years ago. People came here following the ice-flow. Later the town Kleshchin was founded on a hill, and in 1152 was transferred by Yuri Dolgoruki to another place, to a lowland, a few kilometers further. Another name was given to it – Pereslavl-Zalessky. The new town became a strong fortress to defend the territory from numerous enemies. It was surrounded by the ring of earthen ramparts (кольцо земляных валов) of 10-16m. high and stretching for 2,5km.

A. What teenagers feel and do is also of interest to governments. The following facts are taken from the official survey. Almost 60 per cent of British teenagers have a part-time job. The most popular jobs are working in shops and stores (usually on Saturdays), doing a paper round (mornings, before school), or babysitting.

B. Nearly all teenagers claim they help with the housework. But most admit they only do it because they have to.

C. Two thirds of those who were interviewed take part regularly in one or more sporting activities. Swimming is very popular with both sexes, while more than 45 per cent of boys play football.

D. Money is seen as a problem by most teenagers. Without it they can't buy clothes or gadgets, or go to concerts, cinemas or discos. The majority of girls spend their pocket money on clothes; half the boys spend it on gadgets. Three quarters of all teenagers try to save at least some money.

E. Most teenagers get along with their parents quite well. Although a lot of teenagers believe their parents are too strict, most agree that their parents offer help and support in times of crisis. When there are arguments, however, they are usually about what time they should come home at night, where they are going, and who they are going with.

The lives of the Inuit people of North America have changed a lot in 50 years. First, their name: people called them Eskimos, but now they are called Inuits, A____ means "the people". Life in a city is much easier than in the country — developed transport system, sewerage system, sports clubs, shopping mails, etc. Modern men are too sophisticated for simple country pleasures. There is far more entertainment in a city than in the country. Cities offer high concentration of good things in life: big stores, restaurants, theatres, cinema, art galleries. Life is more convenient in a city, as services are always better there. It is possible to go out, make friends and never be cut off from them by weather conditions. Generally, people do not mind what you do in a city. In the country, everybody knows you and expects you to live and behave in a certain way. Moreover, life is never dull in a city; people always have something to do there.

It is needless to say that citizens are more advantaged in education. Students have museum classes and excursions. They can attend lectures and preparatory courses, and therefore have more chances to enter this or that university. After graduating from a university, the residents of big cities are more likely to find a prestigious and well-paid job. They are more communicative, more experienced. They usually have more friends and relatives to help them. In a city, people have more chances to succeed.

Moscow through the Eyes of an American (part 2)

The major attraction in Moscow is the Kremlin, alone more than reason enough for a Moscow visit, and you're sure to admire it. Near the Kremlin is enormous, all history-filled, splendid Red Square. The chief attraction there is the massive Lenin Mausoleum, first destination of every visitor to Moscow. Tverskaya Street, Moscow's main thoroughfare, is nearby, and one will want to walk along it - noting the lovely old National Hotel, shops, cafes, and other enterprises on the way. There are, of course, innumerable other sightseeing attractions. I should certainly suggest taking in Teatralnaya square, with the classic colonnaded facade of the early nineteenth-century Bolshoi Theater; the theatrical district with its narrow, elderly streets; Gorky Park, with grass that may need clipping, but without all those crazies and unfortunate unemployed people who hang out in Central Park of New York; remaining seventeenth-and-eighteenth-century town houses and public buildings. At Vorobyovi Hills is Moscow State University one of the world's largest and modern buildings. And its style is imitated in a number of smaller structures, called sometimes Moscow skyscrapers. The Moscow Metro, or subway, is a twentieth-century wonder that must be seen to be believed, rivaled only by that of St. Petersburg. Each station is the work of a different team of architects, artists, and designers, and the more elaborate are nothing less than palaces. Additionally, the Metro, as a transit system, is excellent and spotlessly clean. It'll take you from the center to the suburbs in no time. It doesn't depend on any traffic and is reliable even in the rush hour. Accidents are very rare in it, to say nothing of criminals' actions.

A. When you think of the Irish, you often picture a red-haired person dressed all in green. However, it's just a popular myth which has grown into a tradition, particularly in the United States. It's customary in Ireland to wear green clothes only on St. Patrick's Day. Lots of people are tricked by this cliche. However, originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was not green, but blue.


B. In Ireland, the colour green was long considered to bring bad fortune. The reason is that in Irish folklore green is the favourite color of the Good People (the proper name for fairies). Myths run that they are likely to steal people, especially children, who wear too much of the colour. In the past, a girl would never wear anything green on her wedding day.


C. Christmas is a very important celebration in Ireland. After dinner on Christmas Eve, it is common for families to leave milk and bread on the table as a sign of friendliness and kindness. Another custom is to leave the door unlocked. A lit candle is left in a window during the night. It represents help for any traveller who is passing by.


D. Potatoes form the basis for many traditional Irish dishes. They are eaten boiled,mashed, fried, baked, you name it. Potatoes are mixed with cabbage or green onions to make traditional Irish dishes. They are also made into potato cakes and used in soups or stews. It's common to find potatoes cooked in two different ways on the same dinner plate.


E. The shamrock is still a popular sign of good fortune in Ireland. It is believed that anyone who possesses one will be blessed with fortune in everything, even in gambling, and will be saved from the evil of witches. There are certain conditions to be met so that its power remains effective: the owner of the shamrock must keep it away from the public eye and never give it to anyone else.


F. Ireland is known as the native land of limericks — short humorous poems that have five lines. They make people laugh and are easy to remember! Lots of poets and writers were fond of limericks. The word "limerick" probably comes from the Irish town of Limerick. The short poem has made the town known all over the world.

The tourist's initial impression of Moscow is influenced by its massive architectural style. Russians seldom, if ever, build anything small, and Moscow provides endless examples of the Russian love for big sizes. The main
thoroughfares are six to eight lanes wide. To cross them, pedestrians are required to use underground passageways located at various intersections. What at first impresses one, perhaps, more in Moscow, than in other Russian cities, is the people – the apparently unending masses of people. I saw them crowding cafes, shops, streets, Metro stations. I watched them packing the parks and the theaters and the restaurants. For the newcomer they are the city's most compelling attraction. Muscovites, like most Russians and their fellow Slavs in the Ukraine and Belorussia, are generous, considerate, emotional, and friendly. But these people can be hostile as well the way they were in the years of the Great Patriotic War when they had to defend their Motherland from the German fascists.

Moscow through the Eyes of an American

Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation. It is not only the political center of Russia, but also the major cultural and transportation center. The tourist's initial impression of Moscow is influenced by its massive architectural style. Russians seldom, if ever, build anything small, and Moscow provides endless examples of the Russian love for big sizes. The main
thoroughfares are six to eight lanes wide. To cross them, pedestrians are required to use underground passageways located at various intersections. What at first impresses one, perhaps, more in Moscow, than in other Russian cities, is the people – the apparently unending masses of people. I saw them crowding cafes, shops, streets, Metro stations. I watched them packing the parks and the theaters and the restaurants. For the newcomer they are the city's most compelling attraction. Muscovites, like most Russians and their fellow Slavs in the Ukraine and Belorussia, are generous, considerate, emotional, and friendly. But these people can be hostile as well the way they were in the years of the Great Patriotic War when they had to defend their Motherland from the German fascists.
