Home assignment for Friday, December 05, 2025 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 10 "Shops and Shopping"

Orally:

1. Listen to Tannenbaum couple times, we will work on this video next time. Scroll down for the link.

2. Go over my handout on conditionals. Make sure you understand the structure of such sentences, how unreal conditions are taken care of.

In Writing:

1. Finish class exercise on conditionals.

2. Write down 10 sentences of your own with a 2 and 3rd conditional (5 of each). Please write the Russian equivalent so that I know what exactly you wanted to say.

3. For each sentence in #2 put a direct general question (all in all there should be 10 questions). Example:
Nina wouldn't have gone abroad if she had been able to find a job.
Would Nina have gone abroad if she had been able to find a job?

Unit 10 "Shops and Shopping"

Orally:

1. Listen to Tannenbaum 4-5 times (there are two parts), links to the video follow. We put down all vocabulary in class, it makes things easier for you. You should be able to come up with a relatively complex (in terms of the language) and coherent story about how susceptible you are to advertisement in general, what factors make people more or less susceptible to advertisement, about celebrities marketing something and how they make you more (or less) likely to buy stuff they advertise.

https://rutube.ru/video/a9425428a3c3b3ecd184149736d92b80/

2. An additional text on pros and cons of online shopping. Go over it just once, don't spend too much time on it.

3. Think (just think) how you would approach discussion on "Shopping and Ecology".

4. Future Forms. You should be experts on them by now. You should be able to explain differences between all of them and provide examples of their usage. Expect to see this on tests.

In Writing:

1. Finish the exercises on quantifiers and future forms I distributed in class. Just mark the correct answers.

Home assignment for Friday, November 21, 2025 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 10 "Shops and Shopping"

Orally:

1. Below is the link to the audio we listened in class (on shopping and marketing strategies). Please listen as many times as you need to have a 100% understanding of the language. Though you are not supposed to write the script, I nevertheless want to ask you to list (on a separate sheet of paper - so that you could keep it for your future reference) all 6 strategies and briefly write what is wrong with each one of them. That will help you when we discuss the topic.

https://disk.yandex.ru/d/dddsyi-svlXGOQ

2. Make sure you have a superb understanding of future forms and when we use this or that form. I will give you more color on that next time. You should expect to see related exercises on tests.

3. Amelia Earhart is still due (retell), as well as the AirFrance text with speech patterns (by heart).

In Writing:

1. Exercise on future forms (it was a handout).

Unit 10

Orally:

1. Amelia Earhart article I gave you last time to retell very close to the text. You have quite a few underlined words and phrases, make sure you use all of them (this is going to be the major criteria of your evaluation).

2. Review the likelihood vocabulary I gave you. I will elaborate on that a little bit so that you could use it with confidence.

Home assignment for Friday, October 17, 2025 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 9 "Town"

Orally:

1. Text on page 36 to listen to the speaker, read at the speaker's speed. Be ready for discussion.

2. Go over the vocabulary I gave you for the in-class discussion of the following topics:

a) What I like and what I dislike about the city I live in.
b) Pros and Cons of living in a smaller town versus living in a big city.

You might want to jot down your main points and/or even write a short gist for both topics. You will be evaluated on this assignment, with the most important aspect of your evaluation being how rich your vocabulary is, how well you can structure your sentences, how actively you use your grammar (quantifiers). Don't forget you have to be able to talk for two minutes.

Home assignment for Friday, October 03, 2025 (with Vladimir Vl)
Unit 9 "Town"

Orally

1. Text "St.Petersburg" on page 33 to listen to the speaker, read at the speaker's speed. Be ready for the SECOND (!) control reading of the text as the first one was close to failure.

2. Review grammar for the midterm: quantifiers (esp. few/a few, little/a little), question formation.

3. As I am going to source midterm assignments from audio material (Bad things done to siblings, Driving safely, Light house keepers mystery), listen to all of them one more time. By now you should know them very well. PAY MAXIMUM ATTENTION to the following structures from "Driving safely...": you are nearly ten times more likely to have an accident if..., reaching down for smth makes you nealy 5 times more likely to get into an accident, chances are that...  AND ALL SORTS OF RELATED QUESTIONS LIKE: How likely are you to have an accident if..., What is the likelihood of you having an accident if..., By how much does the likelihood of a car accident increase if... etc.

In Writing:

1. Write a script for the second (!!!) part of the Lighthouse keepers story. Retell the whole story as close to the text as possible. Here is the link (there are 2 parts):

https://disk.yandex.ru/d/wqvper01bfJtkA
https://disk.yandex.ru/d/gOKB_0L_lj9TTw

2. Finish working on all kinds of questions (direct, indirect and special) for the following sentence: On 2nd July 1937, Amelia Earhart, the famous American aviator, took off with her navigator from New Guinea, in a small plane, on the last stage of their around-the-world flight.

A little aside note for those who were absent in the class and also as a reminder:

He went to NY with his friends last year.

Direct general Q:       Did he go to NY with his friends last year?
Indirect general Q:    Could you tell me   if (whether)  he went to NY with his friends last year?
"think" general Q:     Do you think                             he went to NY with his friends last year?

Direct subject Q:        Who went to NY with his friends last year?
Indirect subject Q:      Could you tell me who went to NY with his friends last year?
"think" subject Q:       Who do you think        went to NY with his friends last year?

Special questions to "with his friends":

Direct:                       Who did he go to NY last year with?
Indirect:                    Could you tell me who he went to NY last year with?
"think" Q:                   Who do you think       he went to NY last year with?

Special questions to "to NY":

Direct:                       Where did he go with his friends last year?
Indirect:                     Could you tell me where he went with his friends last year?
"think" Q:                   Where do you think        he went with his friends last year?
