Cinema
     Cinema plays a very important role in our life. It is a popular form of art. Lots of people find going to the cinema one of the best ways of spending their leisure time.
     In 1895 the Lumiere brothers gave the world's first real cinema show in Paris to an audience of 33 spectators. The first film they showed was "The Arrival of a train at a Station". Moving pictures seemed so real that the audience was frightened to death by the train rushing at them from the screen.
     There are such genres of feature films as the western, the thriller, the musical, the drama and the comedy. The performance lasts from two or three hours and most cinemas have at least 4 performances a day. Of late cinema screens in our country have been dominated by films produced in the USA. And this tendency is growing.

Theatre
      Theatre is a place where you can see a play staged. It is also one of entertainments.
      A theatre consists of two parts: the stage and the hall. They are separated by a curtain and the orchestra. Actors and actresses perform on the stage and public occupes the hall, the pit, and the gallery. If we made up our mind to go to the theatre we should go to the box-office to buy tickets. Seats can be reserved beforehand.

TV
     We can't imagine our everyday life without TV. Every day, every single evening most of people are watching TV. You can watch whatever you like: news, show, films or anything else. There are so many different channels: news, discovery, sport, music, fashion and others.

Theatre (My Dad says...)
     My Dad says that with our TV sets at home we no longer need the Theatre and do not care whether it lives of dies. I absolutely disagree with him. Theatre is one of the oldest kinds of arts. People used to come to the theatre. During the last fifty years the theatre has had to meet three challenges — from cinema, radio, and television. Cinema, television and internet came into our life much later. All three produce drama of a sort; all possess important advantages.  But without a living theatre movies and television plays would be very crude.
   The main reasons why you need to go to the theatre are:
   You can see how perfect the actors are while performing the shows on the stage. You can get the best feelings ever when they want to show you about the story. You can get sad, happy, joy, or many feelings because the actors can bring the audience to feel what they feel and it will feel more alive than you just watch the movie.


III. Reading. Writing. Free Speech

Radio
 
     Radio is one of the most wonderful discoveries made by human beings. It is the wireless transmission of sounds. This invention was the discovery of the 19th century. Priority in the invention of radio belongs to the Russian scientist Popov. On the 7th of May we celebrate Radio Day.
     The advantage of the radio is a low price. It is cheaper to buy a radio-receiver than PC or TV-set. Radio has some obvious disadvantages. The information couldn’t be supported by the picture. Pictures help us to percept information more intensive. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.
     We use radio to listen to the music on the way. It is not popular anymore, because radio is replaced by the Internet nowadays.
     But radio is still one of the most powerful parts of mass media systems.

1. Cinema
     Cinema is a big part of our life. We usually go to the cinema when we want to see a super new film which is much talked about. But now, we have a chance to see new films at home, and we don’t bother about going to the cinema, standing in a queue and spending about 2 hours in stuffy cinema-hall.
2. Radio
     There are many radio channels, and people have their favourite ones. They listen to them regularly. Some radio programs are especially interesting for the young. The success of the programs depends very much on the personality of the talk-show host. Sometimes radio listeners send emails (or even write letters) to the radio-studios and express their viewpoints, approve or disapprove of the program.

  In our country there are a lot of theatres and theatre goers. Oh, yes! Cinema, TV and the Internet didn't manage to move theatre away from people's life. Theatre can't be substituted by any of them.

     There are many theatres in Moscow. The most popular ones are the Maliy and the Bolshoi Theatre, the Satire Theatre, the Vachtangov Theatre, the Tabakov Theatre, the Puppet Theatre and many others. The most famous of them is the Bolshoi theatre.
     "Have you ever been to the Bolshoi theatre?"
     "Oh, yes! I have. I've been there three times."
     "We had our seats in the stalls, another time in the balcony and the latest time in the dress cirlce"
     "What did you see?"
     "We saw the Swan Lake, then we listened to "???" and at last we enjoyed all the performances."

      It's early morning now. I'm going to school and I'm not happy with the weather! It is cloudy and cold today. The wind is blowing and it is raining now. I have a big umbrella with me but my clothes and my backpack are completely wet. I am starting to dream about my school now. I am coming to the warm hall of my school. I am leaving my wet umbrella and my wet coat and I am going to the classroom.
      I am sitting in the warm and cozy classroom. We are listening to our teacher and writing an interesting text. It is still raining outside, but I'm happy now.

- Victory Day (What do we celebrate? What war was it? When does it start and finish? By whom? Who won it? ...)
- New Year (What do we celebrate? Which way do we celebrate it? What traditions do we have?)
- Holidays in Russia (What is your favourite one? Why do you like it? What holidays do you know?)

XV. Write the text on the topic My Favourite Holiday in Russia (using the Grammar and the Active Voc. of the Unit) min. 10 sentences. Be ready to reproduce it.
