High Time

to refer to something that is already overdue but must be started immediately
the appropriate or right time to do something

After months of being unemployed, it's high time Paul starts a business of his own rather than keep waiting for paid employment.

Don't you think it's high time you studied for your test?

I think it's high time I quit my job and go back to college to get a Masters degree in another discipline.

Sitting Duck

to be an easy target
to be in a vulnerable position to be attacked

The fact that she had no backup plan in case she got caught made her a sitting duck.

I hate to feel like a sitting duck in any situation.

Lead Astray

cause someone to make a mistake.

The interrogators in the case were led astray by false information from one of the witnesses.

Down the Road

- in the future, in a few years
- dismissed, fired

Examples:
Somewhere down the road I think he’ll be successful.
Disagree with the boss and you'll soon be down the road.

Сheat Sheet

a written, or graphic aid that is used by someone when answering questions to which they do not know the answers

John got caught using a cheat sheet during the test, he will be receiving a failing grade and will be in detention for the next three months.

I can never remember all of the formulas that we need to use in chemistry, so I have made a handy cheat sheet that I have laminated and put on my desk.

Like a duck to water

- to do something very quickly and enjoy doing it
- easily and naturally

She's taken to the home of her grandma like a duck to water.
He started skating and he learned quickly, like a duck takes to water.

Chill to the Bone

to get frightened or scare somebody
to be very cold

Passing from nearby a graveyard at night gives me a chill to the bone.

The children got a chill to the bone when they discovered that there was someone in the house already when they entered.

It was blistering cold in the street and we got chilled to the bone

speak too soon

to say something with the belief that it will be right and then it is later found out to be untrue
to make an assumption regarding a situation only to be proven wrong afterwards

I was certain Nina would fail at her task and said so boldly. When she successfully completed her task, I knew I had spoken too soon.
It's better to speak after getting all the facts. That way you avoid speaking too soon.

tongue in cheek

something said in humour, but with an act of being serious
say something in an ironic way

The latest movie I watched was a tongue in cheek look at the way the media tends to over-hype certain pieces of news.
One of the speakers at the business conference gave a tongue in cheek speech about the current economic condition of the country.
His comments were intended to be tongue in cheek, but his friends took it seriously and that started a huge argument.

Do you know people whom you can call eager beavers?

I used to know some, but such people aren't a frequent occurence nowadays.

Eager Beaver

someone who is very eager to perform tasks and is always offering to do more
a person who does more than what is expected
Don’t be such an eager beaver, we have plenty of time to complete the task.
My little sister is such an eager beaver that she has packed a massive suitcase to go on her first school trip, even though it is only for two days.

Do you know people whom you can call eager beavers?

Have a Ball

to have a great time
to live luxuriously

She knows how to have a ball by herself. She does not need a crowd to be happy.

I promised my sister will have a ball this time on her birthday so I am taking her to the fashion event of the century. She will like it.

Let your heart rule your head

do something based on emotions rather than logic

let your emotions control your sense of reasoning

Most romantic movies and stories paint this rosy picture about love and tell you that all will be well if you let your heart rule your head, but the reality is quite the opposite in most cases.

Sometimes, it pays off to ignore all logic and let your heart rule your head.

out of the blue

out of nowhere or unexpectedly
something that happens without anyone having prior knowledge of it

Out of the blue, a deer came in front of my car.

He did not expect his book to do so well, the award nomination came out of the blue for him.

For months, she kept saying that she wants to marry Robert, and then one day, out of the blue, she announced that she is moving to Spain alone.
