Emperor Peter I Romanov
After the streltsy revolt the real power fell into the hands of Sophia Aleksyeevna but not for long. Those who disliked Sophia’s rule supported Peter. In the end, Sophia was sent away to a convent (женский монастырь) and Peter took power.
The young tsar was keen on (loved) playing war games with the boys of his own age. The boys played war, and as they grew, their games became more complex and realistic. Later the tsar formed an inner circle of trusted friends and advisers with France Lefort and Alexander Menshikov among them.
Peter the Great is best known for his major reforms that made Russia a great nation. Although his methods were cruel and many people called him a tyrant he did a lot for his country. He created a strong navy founded St. Petersburg, reorganized his army according to Western standards, reformed Russian government, finance, trade, education and divided the lands into new administrative parts. tsar Peter was remarkable in many ways and he was one of his country’s effective leaders and greatest reformers.
