Dear Jane,
Thank you for your letter. I was delighted to hear from you. I apologise for being silent for so long, but I've been extremely occupied at school lately.
In your last letter you told me about a feast you had on the occasion of your mom's birthday. I'm glad you had a great time. My family celebrates all members' anniversaries, Halloween, Christmas and Easter. Nothing peculiar about the meal, though. It's solely seasonal food. Mainly our preparations focus on entertainment. We try to do that all the time. It's a shame, but we aren't very keen on celebrating outdoors, for we are too domestic.
Send my best regards to your brother. Were his opponents difficult to beat? How many people supported him? What was the prize? Please write soon.
Sincerely,
  Nick.

Английский язык / Steven Paul Jobs
« : 11 февраля 2016, 12:16:19 »
The speech by Steven Paul Jobs at a graduation ceremony in Stanford University.
It was in 2005 that my idol Steve Jobs came up on a stage at one of the finest universities in America – Stanford. He made an inspiration speech for the students, which was based on three stories of his life. The first one is about “connecting the dots”. Steve Job’s parents made a decision to give him to well-educated couple, and so they picked a lawyer and his wife. Finally they decided to have a girl, but, as it usually happens, their baby was a boy. However, that didn’t change the new parents’ opinion concerning the child, they still wanted him. Then Steve’s biological mother discovered that the new parents had no graduation whatsoever. The lawyer promised to settle mr. Jobs into a college. When it was time for the future Apple executive to apply to a school, he naively chose an establishment that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and as a consequence, the price for tuition began to quickly eat into his savings. And so he one day had a neat idea to abandon this college and to join a calligraphy class. This seemed to have no practical use in adult life. Surprisingly, but ten years later, when he was designing is very first computer all this knowledge helped him to add special features to the PC, and these made the new software even better.
The main idea of the story is that you need to observe your past experience and to use it to find solutions to your problems in the future.

Английский язык / My attitude towards the school uniform
« : 01 февраля 2016, 17:08:30 »
                                                                School uniform: for or against?
Over hundreds of years schools have introduced many peculiar inventions, from twigs sopped in salted water, to standard-based uniform for both boys and girls. Today I would like to offer you my reasonings concerning the issue of wearing this very uniform, for this subject is still a good reason for debates.
I can remember neither the school that presented it to public for the very first time, nor the country where this establishment was located. But one thing is certain: the other schools in the area adopted this idea as well, and it began thriving with an incredible speed, and nowadays the school uniform is considered very prestigious. This had certain advantages. For instance, if you study at school where wearing the uniform is obligatory, you are free from making a choice between your overwhelming* amount of garments. Also, those wearing uniform shall be treated equally, and it is essential for every human not to think low of himself.
Clearly, a lot of individuals liked this idea, but many never means everyone. It's necessary to mention that this concept  was not non-controversial. Many colleges and lyceums hesitated to discuss this topic, while others expressed their objections, saying that this school uniform is an affront to student's feelings. You might agree with this statement. Imagine you joined the military. You, of course, will have some benefits , but you will run up against the same situation. By putting on this "camouflage", you are becoming one of the many. This is also similar to being one of a gigantic pile of vacuum cleaners, all made using a single blueprint. Also, and I may be wrong, the tutors might encounter some problems endeavouring to recognise the students, because they are all wearing the same clothes! I think the pro side doesn't have the upper hand. I'm presuming my arguments are well substanciated.
My verdict: the school uniform to me is senseless, absurd and doesn't contribute to education at all.

*That's sarcasm, of course=)
