Exercise 2. P. 15

1. How does the text show that weather seems to be the leading topic of conversation all over the USA?
It shows us by describing that all the channels of American television give the weather forecasts dozens of times a day; they start all the news programmes with it, then discuss it in the middle, and repeat until the last forecast with a detailed prolonged description of what the weather is going to be like the next day or two.
2. What kind of month is January, according to the National Weather Service?
According to the National Weather Service, January is by far the coldest month of the year and with an average temperature of 30.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. What impression did the January weather in New York make on the author of the story?
The impression it gave the author was a strong-winded weather with occasional snowing and bright sunny days most of the time.
4. What was the author enormously surprised to find out when she switched on the TV set?
That she was a witness to a national disaster, to the most severe winter in the USA in the last one hundred years.
